Power Management and SSPI Errors for Systems Using SQL

Explanation

An "SSPI" error occurs when a computer (or workstation) is unable to connect to the SQL database.  In some cases, these errors occur due to network issues or configuration settings on the computer.  However, it has been found that the power settings in Windows could also be a factor.

More Information

Modifying power settings allows you to control when the monitor or computer goes into "sleep" mode after a period of inactivity.  Having the monitor turn off after a period of time is still recommended since it prevents others from accidently viewing confidential data.  However, the computer should always be set to remain on at all times so to eliminate any possibility of disconnecting from the server.

For example, a prescription is created and printed for a patient then the computer goes through a period of inactivity of 30 minutes (it goes to "sleep").  When it "wakes up" (someone moves the mouse, etc.) the prescription screen re-appears but when another area of ABEL is clicked upon, an "SSPI" error occurs.  The computer was in a low-power state during this time therefore certain components won't have power such as the network card in this case.  ABELMed would need to be restarted to reset its connection even though full power has been restored.

Computer manufacturers may include their own Power Management application and it may be turned off by default.  If it is on, it could override what is set in Windows.  As well, certain components on the computer can be configured independently.  Please review any documentation that came with your computer for more information.

Periodically, software updates occur and it's possible that the Power Management settings could revert back to default without the user knowing.  If you are finding that there are connection issues with the server after a certain period of time, check the power settings again.
