ABEL Startup Utilities - User Documentation
Explanation:
The ABELDent startup utilities is included in versions of ABELDent and will execute automatically. They are designed to provide you automated assistance with important administrative tasks.
More Information:
The utilities execute one after another and function as follows:
1. Log Backup Utility. When ABELDent is first launched, the Log Backup Utility starts and an administrative lock is set by the system to prevent other users from starting the application while the utility is running. If the lock is already set by another user, a dialog displays asking you to wait for the lock to be cleared. You will have the option to exit the application at this time. This utility stores your existing ABELDent log files in a backup directory according to the date they were backed up.
2. Database Backup Utility. When the Log Backup is complete, the system runs a Database Backup Utility. An administrative lock is set by the system to prevent other users from starting the application while the utility is running. This utility copies all databases into a backup directory and determines if the copies are identical. If they are identical, the databases are labeled "secure" otherwise they are labeled "unsecure". Unsecure databases have potential data loss and/or orphaned records and should only be restored for use if some loss of data integrity is considered acceptable. (It is also possible that copies labeled "unsecure" are complete, but were labeled unsecure because the level of data integrity could not be guaranteed.)
3. Database Backup Reminder Utility. When both of the automatic backups are complete, the system will prompt you to make a formal backup of your databases. In some cases, the system can determine whether a backup was already accomplished. If this is the case, you will not see another reminder for 26 hours. However if the system cannot detect that a backup was done, it will prompt you for confirmation. Once you confirm that a formal backup was completed, subsequent instances of ABELDent will display a message stating that a backup was performed and naming you as the person who confirmed this. If you dismiss the backup confirmation dialog, the system will continue to prompt when each subsequent instance of the ABELDent application is opened until a backup is performed or confirmation is given.
4. Database Optimization Utility. The Database Optimization utility determines if a database optimization is required. If one is required the system will compact all your ABELDent databases. The default for optimization is every 30 days.
Notes:
The Log Backup Utility, Database Backup Utility, Database Backup Reminder Utility, and the Database Optimization Utility all have the ability to be disabled individually. The Startup.ini file associated with the Utilities contains groups of key value pairs. You may access this file in the data directory.
By modifying these key values, it is possible to modify certain aspects of how the utilities work. The important key is the ENABLE key, whose value can be Y or N. Any value other than Y or N will be assumed to be Y, so that the utility will be executed. There is an ENABLE key that can be set for each separate utility.
Using this key will allow offices to choose the startup utilities that will be run when ABELDent is launched.
